The “Semantic Daniélou” is a virtual microtonal instrument which uses just intonation, according to the theory of Alain Daniélou as presented in his work “La Sémantique Musicale” (Musical Semantics).
Entirely free of charge, compatible with MacOSX and Windows, it is the ideal tool for discovering the tremendous potential of this musical scale…
It followed the temperaments of the baroque period, known as “unequal”, which were designed to reduce the number of notes needed for the harmonies of that time, making it easier to play certain instruments whilst maintaining an acceptable degree of accuracy of tuning. The “12-note equal temperament” scale, which has become the standard scale for western instruments, evens the scale to identical intervals in each key, at the expense of precision in tuning, since apart from the octave, the other eleven intervals it contains are more or less “out of tune” on an acoustic level.
Alain Daniélou’s theory, delivered in his work Sémantique Musicale (“Musical Semantics”), first published in 1967, is the fruit of many years of research and experimentation in Indian modal music as well as other eastern musical traditions, and offers a novel approach to our perception of relationships between pitches.
The system he elaborated belongs to the family of just intonation scales, also called “natural” scales. This implies that the intervals it is composed of are expressed in the form of ratios made up of whole numbers to both the numerator and the denominator, which as a result creates harmonic ratios between all the notes of the scale, in this case 53 per octave.
The particularity of this scale is that it bestows a special value to harmonics 2, 3 and 5 and their combinations. According to Alain Daniélou, the intervals created from these 3 factors have the power to provoke precise and apparently universal feelings or emotional reactions in humans.
These two specificities; the fact that it brings together 5-limit just intonation intervals, and that they contain an expressive content, is also found in the Hindu musical theory and its 22 shrutis.
With the remarkable recent progress in the field of computing, the last decade has brought a wave of dematerialisation in which the virtual replaces the real. Nowadays all that is required is to link a keyboard to a computer and to download these virtual instruments and in a few clicks all the sounds one could possibly imagine become available.
What could be more logical for the FIND Foundation, after financing the production of a real instrument – the Semantic Daniélou-36 – (whose 2nd version also integrates a virtual instrument) than creating a software version, with the “Semantic Daniélou-53″ ?
In order to undertake this project, the Foundation called upon the services of Christian Braut and his company, Archipel Studios.
A partnership was established with one of the major names in the field: UVI Sounds & Software. UVI instruments have gained notoriety and been used by professional musicians throughout the world in the last ten years, using software such as MOTU MachFive™, Ethno™, BPM™, Spectrasonics Stylus™, Atmosphere™, UVI and Workstation™.
The project’s management (choice of sounds, scales, etc.) was placed in the hands of Jacques Dudon, an internationally renowned microtonality specialist. Microtonal composer, researcher, instrument maker, multi-intrumentalist and current director of l’Atelier d’Exploration Harmonique (“Harmonic Exploration Workshop”), Jacques has invented over five hundred instruments which explore new acoustic ecologies. He has collaborated with the Foundation on several occasions, in particular providing his expertise on the Semantic instruments as a musician. Following this work, in 2007 his group of musicians, l’Ensemble de Musique Microtonale du Thoronet performed in the Abbey of Thoronet, Rome, Venise and Paris, for the “Semantic Works” european tour.
Semantic Daniélou-53: Hex & Hal keyboards
The Semantic Daniélou-53 screen provides dual acces to its scales:
1/ By means of a hexagonal button keyboard whose geometry was inspired from the hexagonal layout of the AXiS-64. It is composed of 74 coloured keys: seven columns of 9 keys plus one column of 10 keys (the 4th) plus one key on the left. In the rest of this article we will refer to it as the Hex keyboard.
Four colours have also been used to benchmark the keys. We have based the design on the AXIS-64 in order to give it a similar layout (more precisions are provided in the section “Running the Semantic Daniélou-53 via the AXiS-64″).
2/ By means of a conventional keyboard or a Halberstadt keyboard (http://www.nonoctave.com/tuning/glossary.html). It spans eight octaves, from C-1 (Midi note 12) to C7 (Midi note 108), which represents 97 keys. Throughout the rest of this article we will refer to it as the Hal keyboard.
The Semantic Daniélou-53 Midi port provides dual access to its scales:
1/ By means of a standard keyboard (same mapping as the Hal keyboard on the screen).
2/ By means of a keyboard designed to optimise microtonal use of the Semantic system, the AXiS-64, which as previously mentioned, presents the same mapping as the Hex keyboard.
Scales and mappings
The Semantic Daniélou-53 offers 72 scales (or “tunings”).
On both the Hex and the Hal keyboards, several keys produce the same intervals, however their purposes are different.
On the Hal keyboard, by making the octaves on the keyboard correspond with those of the scales, musicians can preserve their usual benchmarks.
Let us take the example of a scale composed of a number of intervals lower than 12; for instance 9. Instead of repeating this scale every 9 keys, or – if we consider that the reference note is C3 – having the following octave in A3 (C3 + 9 semi-tones), the next one in F#4 (A3 + 9 semi-tones), etc., the octaves of the scale coincide with those of the Hal keyboard (C3, C4, C5, C6, etc.). Furthermore, instead of leaving three silent keys (logically the three last ones, i.e. A, Bb and B), they are all used, which means that several keys repeat the same note, or variants of those notes.
Therefore, for example, with the scale “bhairav-5.scl” and its 9 intervals, the Eb and E keys produce the same note (5/4), as is the case with C and the F# (1/1), whilst the B produces the tonic in the upper octave (2/1). These mappings are presented in the Scala files (.scl) of the Semantic Daniélou-53 microtunings, available for download on the “Installation” page .

The same principle applies to the “scales” composed of over 12 / under 24 intervals (repetitions every 2 octaves), of over 24 / under 36 intervals (repetitions every 3 octaves), and over 36 / under 48 intervals (repetitions every 4 octaves).
Made up of 53 intervals, the complete “scale” of the Daniélou system is an exception to this rule. With a root in C3 (1/1), the following octave is in G7 and not C8 (the intervals follow each other, none is repeated).
On the Hex keyboard, the approach is more geometrical, in order to obtain the most useful representation possible of the intervals of the complete scale of 53 tones (namely the fact that there are major or minor tones, or semitones 27/25 or 16/15, between one key and the one immediately at its upper right, or one key and the one immediately at its lower right, etc.).
The other mappings, for the scales composed of a maximum of 12, 24, 36 or 48 notes are shown in the layout of ratios which appear on the screen.
Running the Semantic Daniélou-53 via the AXiS-64
Not only can the mapping of the AXiS be modified, but it also has the particularity of being based on fifths. Therefore, for example, the first 9 keys of the left-hand column, from bottom to top, produce the following Midi note numbers: 36, 43, 50, 57, 64, 71, 78, 85 et 92.
For the Semantic Daniélou-53 and its Hex keyboard, it is represented on the screen in the form of a matrix, with seven columns, of which six have 9 keys and one has 10 (the fourth), as well as an eighth column identical to the first, an octave higher, plus an orphan key on the left (number 73), which duplicates the second note from the bottom of the first column on the left (the tonic— 1/1). Thus in total 74 keys.
On the AXiS-64, there are three groups of seven columns (of which six have 9 keys and one has 10 — the second). Thus in all 64 keys x 3 = 192. To run the Semantic Daniélou-53, the “Split Mode” is used, by which each group of seven rows on the AXiS-64 emits its own Midi channel. Generally, the same sound is used for the three “parts” of the Semantic Daniélou-53, via three corresponding channels, with the same settings for each of them and with octave transpositions (-1, 0, +1 or 0, +1, +2). This means that a single and same sound is produced – over three octaves.
The Semantic is also compatible with a Doepfer ribbon controller which enables the user to interpret the Semantic scale in a continual glissando over one octave and a tone, the contact of the tape triggering and releasing the action of the pitchbend. The combination of functions of these two devices, added to those of the Semantic Daniélou-53, transforms the interface into a highly efficient microtonal keyboard.
Developed according to the idea of Alain Daniélou and upon his request, and tuned according to his theory, the Semantic Daniélou-36 is an electronic musical instrument which was conceived by Michel Geiss, Christian Braut, Jean-Claude Dubois and Philippe Monsire. It follows on from a previous version, the S52, an instrument created by Claude Cellier and André Kudelski. The aim of the S52 was to provide a practical application to verify the theory, but it was quite difficult to use for musicians, mainy in terms of its ergonomy, and it offered only very basic sounds.
The Semantic is a musical instrument of its own kind. In order to simplify its use, Alain Daniélou decided to use only 36 of the 53 notes of the scale (3 choices for each of the 12 notes), the others being less essential in his opinion.
The Semantic Daniélou is a comprehensive,”ready to play” instrument. With its integrated amplification system it is totally independent and perfectly accessible for both the musician and the composer. In its first version, it was composed of a K2000R Kurzweil sound generator, an electronic control board and two keyboards with buttons from the Midy 20 Cavagnolo. An integrated speaker system means that the Semantic Daniélou does not require an external PA system. The instrument offers 20 different sounds whose simple tones which were chosen specifically to best demonstrate the theory of Alain Daniélou. In order to allow musical expression, the speed with which the keys are pressed down (the “velocity”) enduces an action on the volume of the sounds. It also includes sustain and soft pedals, as well as potentiometers which affect the tone and the amplitude envelope’s attack and release times.
For this first version, one of the reasons that the K2000R Kurzweil was chosen is that it offers the possibility of tuning each note to a cent (1/100th of a semi-tone). In other words, in the worst case, a given note could not be more than half a cent out of tune with its theoretical Danliélou value: a small error, which he had accounted for. It can be noted, for example, that if the notes C1 (65,406 Hz) and C6 (2093,005 Hz) are raised by a cent, their frequency is respectively raised by 0,0378 and 1,209 Hz.
When compared to a traditional piano keyboard, the button keyboard offers two advantages. Firstly its appearance is purposefully different: the piano keyboard, in the mind of a musician, is synonymous with equal temperament. For this reason it was considered important that from the outset an instrument as innovative as the Semantic Daniélou should set itself apart from preconceived ideas – including piano keys. Furthermore, in terms of the span of the musician’s fingers, the button keyboard enables a greater selection of notes than that of a piano, which is very useful for the “playability” of the instrument, which comprises three times more notes per octave than a piano keyboard.
The Semantic Daniélou includes two keyboards (one for the left and one for the right hand), with a total of 105 keys, which gives a range of almost six octaves. It is also possible to transpose it by semi-tones or by octaves. The space occupied by the 105 keyboard buttons is 40cm by 10cm. To provide a comparison, an octave on the Daniélou scale spans a length of approximately 13 cm, whilst on a piano keyboard, for the same notes, the space required would be 36 cm, i.e. 3 times more.
The instrument described above was used in concert in Paris, Rome, Venise and at the Abbey of Thoronet (in the Var area). Albeit functional, this initial projet remained for several years at a stage of development which corresponded with the type of technology that was available in the 1990s, with a rudimentary sound palette.
At his own initiative, Michel Geiss later developed a considerably improved version, integrating recent IT developments in the field of music. This version was finalised in 2013. It includes a powerful computer to produce and control its sounds. With this major technological update the sounds available are much richer and more varied, and also significantly more expressive than the original version, whilst providing a precision of pitch which is 1 000 times greater (1 000th of a cent). In addition, a ribbon controller has been added in order to play subtle and progressive pitchbend variations, in a similar way to Ondes Martenot. Finally, the use of a computer to replace the previous system makes it possible to modify the existing sounds and to add new ones. Its computerisation also offers the possibility of managing the sound internally by means of a sequencer or arpeggiator, without modifying the physical stucture of the instrument.

Semantic Works is a western tribute to non-European forms of music and to the musicology work of Alain Daniélou. For the occasion of the 100th commemoration of the birth of Alain Daniélou (1907-1994) the Semantic Daniélou featured for the first time in concert. This microtonal instrument with 36 tones per octave was developed by Michel Geiss and Christian Braut in collaboration with Philippe Monsire and Jean-Claude Dubois, following the theories advanced by Alain Daniélou in his work “Sémantique musicale”. Mainly inspired by Indian influences, and evoking the mystery and the sensuality of ragas, Semantic works investigates the whole array of human emotions. The atmosphere is alternately contemplative, exalted or simply joyful, with brief references to sacred Sufi, celtic, mediaeval, amerindian, persian and indonesian music.
The gestures, lines, dance and occasional sounds of the calligraphy artist unfold in real time on the center stage, on his rotating disc impregnated with a clay emulsion, and instantly mirror the harmonies and improvisations of the four musicians of the EMMT. The fulgurance of the harmonic colours of the sitar, the chandravina, the Semantic Daniélou and the voices, diffused throughout the spacious vaultsof the Abbey, and the forms which emerge from the clay, carry us into secret dimensions of our being, where inner silence holds and reunites all paradoxes.
As part of the 2007 commemorations of the 100th anniversary of Alain Daniélou’s birth, several concerts interpreting compositions by Jaques Dudon and showcasing the Semantic were organised by the A.E.H. (Atelier d’Exploration Harmonique – Harmonic Exploration Workshop):

The patent filed by Alain Daniélou and Maurice Martenot in 1936 is evidence of the perseverence of Alain Daniélou who committed nearly 60 years to the project of producing a microtonal instrument as an alternative to the western “equal temperament”. Small harmoniums were built in India in the 1940’s, a measuring instrument was created in the Kudelski/Nagra workshop in Lausanne, and finally, facilitated by developments in computer technology, the Semantic Daniélou was created in 2000, by Michel Geiss and Christian Braut, and baptised by the italian composer Sylvano Bussotti.

For the last two centuries – a recent period in terms of musical history – western musicians have been using imperfect musical intervals: those of the equal temperament with 12 notes per octave. Although these intervals have been used to compose thoughout many different types of music, in reality they are merely the result of a mathematical compromise to simplify the development of a certain category of acoustic and later electronic instruments, and they do not take into account the finesse of our system of perception.
A number of studies have demonstrated that we have a much greater analytical capacity than simply being able to recognise 12 tempered intervals; we are also capable of integrating a significant amount of psycho-sensory factors, including tone and intonation.
Historically, in the 17th century, the philosopher and mathematician Leibniz set forth the theory of “subconscious evaluation” according to which music is defined “as the pleasure of the soul which counts and which does not know it counts”.
The Pythagorian musical theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau followed this idea when he established a connection between our perception of musical intervals and mathematics, and affirmed that melody arises from harmony, and through it “is able to perceive the relationships between numbers, as they arise throught the universe”.
More recently, a number of composers, including Harry Partch, Lou Harrison, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Wendy Carlos, David B. Doty, and Robert Rich have used various microtonal scales, reconnecting with traditional music throughout the world, or creating new temperaments or scales, according to just intonation.
With a similar approach to Leibniz or Rameau, Alain Daniélou was highly committed to the study of musical intervals, after having studied Indan music and its subtleties for a good part of his life. He elaborated a musical scale of 53 notes, exclusively built of ratios of numbers 2, 3 and 5, and theory which, according to Fritz Winckel, “allows musical ratios to appear in a whole new light” (as described in his work “Sémantique Musicale”).
In his teens, Alain Daniélou was already seeking to build an instrument with micro-intervals. The Semantic Daniélou, in its physical version (36 notes) and its software version (53 notes), is the result of almost 70 years of work and is a remarkable demonstration of perserverence. In both versions, the instrument respects the theory of the three number combination Daniélou set forth, with the Semantic Daniélou-53 offering the total possible harmonic combinations of the Semantic system.

From a very young age, Alain Daniélou showed a great interest for artistic pursuits. He painted (water colours), and continued to do so throughout his whole life, he sang, and he learned to play the piano. Later, he studied composition with Mal d’Olonne, encountered the world of dance and gave recitals.
In 1926, he was 19 years old. He received a grant for a trip to Algeria to study Arab music. I believe that it was during this period that he became aware of the limits, and to a certain degree the abberation of the musical system which divides an octave into 12 equal semitones, a concept which prevents musicians interpreting Arab music or in fact most kinds, other than western music. He thus took up the torch after his illustrious predecessors: Zarlino, Werckmeister, Mercator, Holder, Helmholtz, etc.
Holder and Mercator divided the octave into 53 equal parts; an approach which has similarities with the system conceived by Alain Daniélou, but which did not, as Daniélou’s did, preserve the naural tuning of intervals created by the harmonics 3 and 5, illustrated used by the Indian shrutis.
I could not confirm it, yet I suspect that the idea of a new musical instrument did not being to dawn in his mind during his trip to Algeria in 1926.
His discovery of Indian music a few years later reinforced his passion for this research.
In 1936, he worked in partnership with Maurice Martenot to develop the first instrument with a tuneable keyboard: I still have the patent of 1937 which the musicians filed, and I have donated to the “Association pour la Promotion et la Diffusion des Ondes Martenot” (Organisation for the Promotion and Broadcasting of Ondes Martenot) the prototype which was created at the time. I recently rediscovered it at the Musée de la Musique de La Villette à Paris (Paris La Villette Music Museum)
A few years later, Alain Daniélou developed a new hand-crafted instrument in India, whose design included a large quantity of bicycle spokes. He then had a series of small harmoniums made, called Shruti Veena, of which one remains.
His first book, naturally dedicated to the same subject; “An Introduction to the Study of Musical Scales”, was published in 1943 in London (by an Indian company). It was later translated into a French version with the title “Traité de Musicologie Comparée” (Treatise on Comparative Musicology) and a new American version was published in 1995; “Music and the Power of Sound », with an introduction by Sylvano Bussotti. The final version on the same subject; “Sémantique Musicale”, was published in Paris in 1967 and has since been regularly reprinted with different introductions (Fritz Winckel, acoustician and Françoise Escal, musicologist). The latest version, revised and prefaced by Jacques Dudon and related to the new instrument, is currently being printed (also scheduled to be launched in e-book format and in English). These books bear witness to the ongoing interest of musicians, musicologists, psychologists and acousticians for the research of Alain Daniélou.
The project of building a precise instrument began again in 1970’s, when Alain Daniélou decided to develop a une instrument using the latest electronic technology, with his friend the engineer Stefan Kudelski, known for inventing and building the Nagra, a luxury portable tape-recorder.
Stefan Kudelski passed the project on to his son André, a young electronics engineer, and Claude Cellier, an electronics engineer and musician.
This new instrument, named the S52, which was based exactly on the system described in the book “Sémantique Musicale” and was technically very elaborated, did present a few shortcomings, but nevertheless enabled Alain Daniélou to advance with his theory inspired from the Indian model, and to test its psychoacoustic applications. The prototype was presented in Paris in 1980, amongst others to the UNESCO International Music Council as well as the IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique – Research and Acoustic/Music Coordination Institute), and afterwards in Bordeaux, Berlin, Rome, etc.
Christened as the “organ of Shiva” by the le journalist Jean Chalon, the S52 remained a prototype, since its keyboard was used more as an experimental apparatus than a real musical instrument.
Interest for such an instrument was immediate, be it amongst people working in fields concerned by micro-intervals in music, amongst music-therapy specialists or in non-european music. Sylvano Bussotti, who had until then never included electronic instruments in his works, became highly interested in the project, and wrote a piece for the instrument, which was played by the pianist Mauro Castellano and directed by the conductor Marcello Panni in a work called “La Vergine ispirata”.

The aventure does not end here, since two years before the death of Alain Daniélou, the ethnomusicologist Xavier Bellenger brought together Michel Geiss and Jacques Cloarec. During a meeting in Lausanne, Alain Daniélou, already quite frail, informed Michel Geiss of his desire to have an instrument made based on his theory. Michel Geiss suggested that the instrument could be conceived in the form of an electronic keyboard with accordion type buttons. This type of keyboard would allow a density of notes best adapted for playing a larger number of notes per octave. Alain Daniélou validated the concept and proposed that the layout of the notes be simplified by reducing them to 36 per octave, which he judged sufficient (Handwritten letter by Alain Daniélou to Michel Geiss on the subject of the keyboard).
Follwing these guidelines, Michel Geiss called on two collaborators: Christian Braut, an computorised music specialist, and Jean-Claude Dubois, eclectronics engineer, in order to build the instrument.
Daniélou died in 1994 without having seen the outcome of the project.
Philippe Monsire, an industrial designer, was in charge of creating the futuristic shell to contain all the different elements of this new instrument. It was given its name by the composer Sylvano Bussotti, who called it the “Semantic Daniélou”. Although it was operational, this first model remained for a long time in the developmental stages, an instrument with somewhat rudimental sounds, the original concept design. It was used in a number of concerts, in Paris, Rome Venise, and at the Abbey of Thoronet.
Michel Geiss later developed a considerably improved model, enhanced by recent developments in computer technology with an integrated internal computer to control sound production. This version was released in 2013. This major technological update offers a wide variety of rich and expressive sounds as well as remarkable pitch precision (a thousandth of a hundredth).
At the same time, Christian Braut and Jacques Dudon, an uncontested specialist in microtonalities, began to work on the development of a software version of the Semantic, with 53 notes per octave, available for free download via internet.
Based on the keyboard of the Semantic Daniélou-36, Jacques Dudon designed the ideal 53-note keyboard and found a MIDI interface (the Axis-64) which was compatible with its geometry. He conceived the first tunings and mappings of the instrument and wrote the specifications of the “Semantic Daniélou-53″ which Christian Braut then referred to Alain Etchart of the Univers Sons team, where Arnaud Sicard finalised the IT operating system.
After a number of tests with compatible keyboards, the Semantic Daniélou-53 is today fully operational. The diversity of pre-programmed scales, each containing several modes, which can be supported by a micro-tunable drone note, make it an accessible and highly pedagogical instrument.
Our foundation, FIND, is in charge of the promotion of these two creations, by means for example of workshops which were hosted last year and an upcoming seminar in 2017, and in doing so honours the culmination of a project which lasted for 80 years.
